Do Your Agents Know How Texas REALTORS® Advocacy Benefits Them?

Have your agents ever asked you what Texas REALTORS® does for them?

Share these recent legislative wins—and let them know that’s only a fraction of the ways Texas REALTORS® helps you, your clients, and property owners.

Fighting for property tax relief
Texas REALTORS® advocated for you and your clients during this year’s Regular and Special Sessions of the 89th Texas Legislature. Thanks in part to the association’s efforts, legislators placed increased property tax exemptions on the November ballot.

This November, you can vote for increased exemptions for homesteads paying school taxes (Proposition 13) and for elderly and disabled homeowners (Proposition 11). If approved by voters, these constitutional amendments would result in significant tax relief for you and your clients.

Saving small businesses time and money through tax exemptions
Texas REALTORS® also championed legislation to lower your taxes on business personal property, like furniture and computers. Lawmakers placed Proposition 9 on the November ballot.

If voters approve Proposition 9, the amount you and your agents can exempt leaps from $2,500 of the market value of your business property to $125,000. It would also mean less work for you and your agents, as you would no longer have to report totals under $125,000.

If it passes, this proposition will spell significant tax relief for small businesses—and many agents who are independent contractors!

Supporting property owners with new legal recourses
Texas REALTORS® worked with lawmakers to support new laws to address the problems associated with unauthorized occupants and squatters. Now, property owners have a more streamlined process for evictions and the immediate removal of squatters. Your feedback paved the way for these laws: squatter concerns were added to the Texas REALTORS® legislative policy priorities after more than 99% of members who responded to a 2024 policy priorities survey identified it as a significant issue.

Protecting your clients from fraud
During the second Special Session, Texas REALTORS® supported SB 16, which adds safeguards and penalties for real property theft and real property fraud. The association’s collaboration with the title industry and state government has resulted in a coordinated effort to protect your clients and transactions.

Supporting affordability to make homeownership attainable for more Texans
In August, Gov. Abbott signed into law three bills that ban cities from requiring unreasonably large lot sizes, allow for mixed-use and multifamily development in areas currently zoned as commercial areas, and reform the outdated valid petition process. These actions, supported by Texas REALTORS®, will help address housing availability and affordability for your clients.

Texas REALTORS® advocacy produces real-world benefits for you, your agents, and your clients. Let everyone know about the difference Texas REALTORS® is making!
